History brought to life
The Murten diorama in the National Museum Zurich depicts an important moment in the history of Switzerland: The Battle of Murten in 1476, in which the Confederates defeated the Burgundian Duke Charles the Bold, earning themselves a reputation as a feared military power far beyond the country’s borders.
With our augmented reality app, viewers can now experience the victory in the Burgundian Wars live.

Since the 19th century, dioramas have been used to bring people closer to history and stories. Together with the National Museum Zurich, we set out to rethink this concept and create a completely new visitor experience by merging the established with the latest technologies.
The Murten diorama depicts the Battle of Murten, which can be divided historically into 6 phases that were previously presented in the classic way: A spotlight activated at the touch of a button drew the viewer’s attention to a phase, accompanied by a text panel explaining the active part of the battle.
Augmented reality manages to close the gap between model and information. Instead of constantly having to look back and forth from the model to a panel next to the diorama, visitors can immerse themselves completely in what is happening in front of them.
The “AR Murtendiorama” app manages to attract museum visitors of all ages and greatly simplify a complex topic.
This is achieved by clearly structuring the diorama through animations and graphic representations and putting control in the hands of the visitors. They decide for themselves what they want to see and at what pace they want to recreate the Battle of Murten.
"The AR Murtendiorama is a successful example of how museum content can be brought to life."

The app relies on the iOS-exclusive ARKit feature “AR World Map”. This forms the backbone of model tracking. It allows a world map to be measured, saved on the iPad and reloaded the next time the app is started.
The augmented reality part was implemented using the pioneering Unity with AR Foundation engine, with complex, multi-stage post-processing being used for the graphic effects.
