Google calls it Tango
Google has also jumped on the augmented reality bandwagon. Unlike latecomer Apple, Google relies on a combination of depth sensors and an optical camera. This allows the distance to objects to be measured using infrared radiation. This solution requires special hardware, which is only built into mobile devices to a limited extent – only 2 Tango-compatible devices are available on the market. Compared to the Apple AR Kit, we see little potential here due to the limitations of the end devices. The question arises as to whether depth sensors will not be built into mobile devices as standard in the future. An affirmative answer to this question is not unlikely and would bring the Tango platform back into the game. The race for the AR platform of the future remains exciting.
