Swiss AR Map: The 3D map of Switzerland
Maps have accompanied mankind for centuries. While in the Middle Ages our lives depended on whether the nautical chart we brought with us was roughly correct, nowadays we plan our next hike or look for the quickest route to the nearest DIY store. Digitally, of course. It’s no wonder that the development of apps and technological advances in the field of navigation have had a major impact on our daily lives.

Augmented reality navigation
It is also no wonder that, in addition to the digital version of the classic 2D map, there are various concepts for making navigation via mobile devices even easier in the future. Clear the stage for augmented reality apps. Anyone who follows our work knows that we are also constantly feeling the technological pulse of the times. So it’s clear that the topic of AR navigation is also on our radar.
From hackathon to store upload
So it came about that we put our developer Rafi behind the topic for a few days as part of an internal hackathon, ran his result through the refinement forge of interaction designer Silio and ended up with a finished app in front of us. We christened it “Swiss AR Map”.
2 modes: Route & Environment
The Swiss AR Map is currently nothing more than a showcase and demonstrates what is already possible with augmented reality. Users can enter a route of their choice and place it in front of them in augmented reality. The 3D model then wonderfully shows what kind of terrain awaits you along the way.
The second mode, “Surroundings”, also invites you to explore: By entering any location (or locating your own position) including the radius, you can view a specific area in AR. This is useful in unfamiliar cities, for example, or if I want to see what’s waiting for me over the next hill on a hike. As a bonus, the Wikipedia connection also shows what exciting things are nearby.
