FOOBY: The success story enters the next round

Since November 1, 2023, Coop’s successful recipe app has had a new look. On behalf of and in collaboration with Coop and the Obvious agency, we modernized FOOBY and made it technologically fit for the future.

The digital kitchen helper from Coop has received an update and now shines in new – even better – freshness. For the adapted version, not only have the user interface and accessibility features been optimized, but new functions have also been added to enhance the cooking experience with FOOBY even better.

More than just an update

This was not a classic update with a new look and functionalities, but the entire app had to be rebuilt from scratch. The reason for this was that the previously used Xamarin technology was no longer up to the demands of the future and we had to switch to the higher-performance technology of Flutter changed. The app has struggled with crashes and performance issues in recent months, which have now been resolved with Flutter.

Xamarin: End of Life

FOOBY is the first of our projects whose technology reached the end of life and therefore had to be redesigned and rebuilt. Technologies and design requirements are constantly changing, so it was also necessary for the successful Coop app to move with the times, make adjustments and do justice to today’s design trends. After all, the app has been available in the stores since 2017 and has successfully maintained its position in the top 10 in the category ever since!

The challenge for FOOBY was to completely rebuild the app with all existing – and new features – in Flutter. We had to ensure that all existing data was migrated and that the various interfaces to Coop functioned flawlessly. The change in technology should not be noticeable for users – only the new look and the performance of the new technology should be convincing.

Design, accessibility and new search

The innovations include not only the new and fresh design, but also the implementation of accessibility features that make it easier for people with disabilities to use the app. The structure of the app is also more user-friendly and is now also available in dark mode.

The search function – one of the most important functions of a recipe app – can now be found prominently and has been given its own page. It can be personalized there so that only certain recipes are displayed for the respective user by default (e.g. gluten-free, vegan, etc.). Several filter options help to find the right recipe for every diet and every occasion. .

Coop and Bitforge: a well-rehearsed team

We owe the success of this project in part to the fantastic collaboration with Coop and Obvious thanks to Bitforge. “The distribution of roles was well coordinated and we maintained very close contact,” says Antonia, project manager at Bitforge. The team worked together independently of company boundaries.

FOOBY is a success story. The app has been available in the stores for six years and is THE Swiss cooking app with several hundred thousand downloads. Bitforge was on board right from the start. “As in any technical project, not everything went smoothly right from the start – but no matter how hopeless the situation seemed at first glance, Bitforge always got the project back on track with their tireless commitment and impressive expertise. And they never lost their good humor,” says Nathaline Neuschwander, Head of FOOBY at Coop.

With the new version of FOOBY, the successful Swiss cooking app is definitely equipped for the coming years.

FOOBY is available in the App Store and in Google Play and for Huawei.
