The innovative hiking app from the Principality of Liechtenstein
To mark the 300th anniversary of the Principality of Liechtenstein, we collaborated with Liechtenstein Marketing to develop an experience app that brings the most important milestones from three centuries of Liechtenstein’s history to life using state-of-the-art technology.
The challenge was to make the newly created Liechtenstein Trail a multidimensional experience for visitors on site and to convey historical content in an attractive way.

Visitors can explore the Principality on foot with LIstory. On a route of 75 kilometers through the 11 municipalities of the country, they can immerse themselves in historical highlights at 150 locations and experience Liechtenstein’s history step by step.
A combination of Unity and web technologies (vue.js) was used for the development of LIstory. This was because, although Unity is a good authoring tool for creating 3D content, it is not particularly well suited to the content and UI requirements of such an extensive app. A customized CMS was also created to provide the content, which greatly simplifies the long-term management of the app content.
The entire app is very map-centric, both in terms of navigation and data retrieval. It makes use of established smartphone gestures, for which great importance was attached to intuitive application and correctness as well as fluidity of use.
The design of the maps used was completely geared towards the “hiker” target group. The maps have a topographical design and do without irrelevant information and overloaded subpages – the latter in particular was a major challenge given the incredible amount of content.
"The combination of state-of-the-art technology, exercise in the great outdoors and the transfer of knowledge make this project unique."

The design of the app is very much based on the Liechtenstein flag, with the three colors used to guide users and create a content classification:
– Blue summarizes all experience stations
– Red categorizes all route elements
– Yellow (gold) stands for the crown – the gamification badge
From a design perspective, it is also essential to create a uniform look and feel on iOS and Android. This was achieved by using the Material Design framework.
LIstory did not simply create content for content containers – on the contrary: over 300 A4 pages of historical material and over 1,000 images were used to create a content concept that was enriched at key points with manually created interactive augmented reality content and 360° images.
The testing strategy before the launch of LIstory consisted of several phases and, in addition to our internal testing process to ensure technical quality, also included extensive user and hallway tests. This enabled us to ensure that the app ran flawlessly and could be experienced intuitively for the big launch at the 300th anniversary celebrations.
Explore the history of this small country step by step. LIstory is the companion on the Liechtenstein Trail, with which visitors can explore the country on a multi-day hike.
