A UNESCO World Heritage Site as an Augmented Reality Experience

A UNESCO World Heritage Site as an Augmented Reality Experience

Right in the heart of Zurich, beneath what is now Sechseläutenplatz, lies an archaeological treasure: the remains of a 5,000-year-old pile-dwelling settlement. Together with the City of Zurich, we have brought this hidden heritage back to life using augmented reality.

The Challenge: Bringing History to Life at the Original Site

The pile-dwelling sites on Lake Zurich are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, but they are hidden from public view. The City of Zurich (Department of Urban Planning) sought a solution to bring this settlement to life right on Sechseläutenplatz. The particular challenge: The square is heavily used for events such as the Sechseläuten festival or markets, making a permanent structural installation impossible.

The technological solution: Precision through Azure Spatial Anchors

In order to anchor the digital reconstruction in space with centimeter-level precision and stability, we pushed the boundaries of what is technologically feasible.

  • Azure Spatial Anchors: The biggest challenge was precisely locating the virtual pile-dwelling village at its historical site. We solved this by using Azure Spatial Anchors in combination with other technologies. This makes it possible to firmly link 3D content to physical coordinates in real space, allowing users to physically walk through the digital buildings.
  • Location Independence & Miniature Mode: The app was technically revamped for its 15th anniversary. In addition to the life-size AR display on-site, the app now offers a miniature model that can be placed anywhere to provide a first glimpse into the Stone Age.
  • Interactive Gamification: An avatar guides users through the village and shares insights into the lives of the pile-dwelling people. Interactive elements such as archery or virtually recreating Stone Age recipes enhance the experience in a playful way.

«Anchoring the pile-dwelling village to a fixed location was an exciting challenge. We were able to solve this by combining various technologies with Azure Spatial Anchors.»

Methodology: “Test early and test often”

An innovative project like “pastZurich” requires an agile approach. In collaboration with SparkWorks (now Creative Dock), we conducted intensive workshops to define personas and the optimal feature set. Multi-stage user testing ensured that the user experience remained intuitive despite the complex technology.

Highlights of the Technical Implementation

  • True-to-scale AR: The app allows users to explore eight life-size houses dedicated to various cantonal archaeological sites.
  • Stable tracking performance: By using cloud-based spatial anchors, the AR model remains stable on-site even under changing lighting conditions and environmental scenarios.
  • Interactive Learning: Through the integration of an avatar and gamification elements, complex archaeological data is transformed into a vivid narrative. Users can not only observe passively but also actively immerse themselves in everyday historical life through activities such as building pile-dwelling houses or cooking like people did in the Stone Age.
